Summary/Abstract: The definition of the taboo that is being used in this text expands the classical, anthropological usage of the word. It concerns the prohibitions that are being maintained by various kinds of censorship – political, moral and ecclesiastical. Through the analysis of the taboo breaking in my films I made an attempt to systematize the rules by describing the areas they applied to and the change they have undergone over the last thirty years. At first the forbidden topics that were present in my films for almost thirty years concerned mainly the issue of the political manipulation of information. Gradually they evolved to more private areas, especially such as the intimate life and the practice of faith. Despite the freedom of speech declared by the democratic state there are still taboo issues that are protected by a form of censorship. However informal it is, it still operates, especially in television stations, which are the main channel of documentary films’ broadcasting. The situation is changing dynamically by means of the development of the new forms of communication, the Internet in particular.
