Summary/Abstract: Theories which explain the phenomenon of voluntary service by pointing to individual attributes can be grouped into those that emphasize motives and those that emphasize rational action and cost-benefit analysis. Age and gender are features differentiating voluntary service and they are, to a great extent, associated with perception and understanding of human capital and social resources. The present considerations focus on the context of effects related with volunteering. Attention was also payed to the varied impact of organizations and communities as well as of regional characteristics on individual decisions to volunteer which remains a fruitful field for exploration. The article presents volunteering as prosocial behavior at the example of the countries of the Iberian Peninsula.
