Summary/Abstract: The following article describes the role and constitutional duties of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Analysing statements made by successive presidents, the author emphasises the significance of the independence and autonomy of the office of the president in the resolution of debates and important civic and social issues. The examples studied can help to understand and define the constitutional position of the office of the President of Germany.
