Summary/Abstract: The Austro-Hungarian Empire's occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina created, for the first time in Bosniak history, a social class of so-called profane intelligentsia, which in turn initiated numerous cultural and religious changes during this period. One of the movement's most prominent protagonists was Osman Nuri Hadžić, whose literary and non-literary work is remembered, among other things, for its historically important transformation of Islamic thought. Such a transformation was to help Bosnian Muslims cope with a Eurocentric twentieth century. This paper deals with three aspects of Hadžić's Islamic thought relevant to literary theory: modernism and/or anti-conservatism; neorationalism; and Pan-Islamism. These aspects constitute the essence of his understanding of Islam as an identity that is essential to Bosnian Muslims, and scientifically stimulating and normatively flexible enough for their survival, as they face the challenges of a new age.
