The current foreign policy of the Russian Federation towards European Union – basic issues

Summary/Abstract: The main goal of this article is to synthetically depict the sources of Russian foreign policy, especially with regard to the European Union. The central thesis is, that the main driver behind Russian international conduct is the preservation of power by current government. To do so Moscow intentionally orchestrates controlled conflict with the West to induce the rally-around-the-leaders effect. It is supposed to augment the legitimization of the authorities which has been diminished by the economic hardships.
