Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses Jan Karłowicz’s (1836–1903) contribution to the development of Polish dialectology, consisting mainly in the compilation of the “Dictionary of Polish Dialects” – a major breakthrough in the Polish dialectal lexicography and the first full dialectal dictionary in the Slavonic language area – as well as in his work as an organizer of scientific life. His organizational efforts are presented chiefly on the basis of archival materials, mainly correspondence preserved e.g. in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives and – to a lesser extent – in the Polish archives. The materials exemplify Karłowicz’s co-operation with both professional scientists and laymen (enthusiasts of folklore, dialects and of broadly understood folk culture) as far as collecting ‘folk objects’ is concerned. The paper also presents the content of the “Dictionary of Polish Dialects” with respect to the 1911 critical review by Kazimierz Nitsch.
