Summary/Abstract: In the article the hydronym Albis/Elbe/Labe is studied from various points of view: geography, historical documentation, diachronic phonetics and morphology, especially word formation. The etymological attempts in the context of Germanic, Celtic and so-called ‘Old European’ hydronymies are evaluated with respect to their semantic motivation in the light of semantic typology.
