Summary/Abstract: Hashimoto’s disease (autoimmune thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, HT) is a chronic autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid gland. Both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin are the major autoantigens in autoimmune thyroiditis. The natural history of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is progressive destruction of the thyroid structure and, as a consequence, thyroid function impairment. Rather than the classic course of the disease, specific features are observed in variant forms of HT: fibrous, IgG4-related, juvenile, and postpartum thyroiditis. Patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis are at increased risk of papillary thyroid cancer.
