Summary/Abstract: Analyzing the principles of coexistence within the contemporary society, Jurgen Habermas highlights an essential weakness of democracy. It is the tension between the normative and the real, between what should be done and what is actually done. Understanding this tension is crucial to understanding modern democracy. It is possible to justify the weakness of the democracy, but an effective way of making democracy stronger is to strengthen civil society. The article seeks to prove the propositions provided above. This is done by juxtaposing Habermas concept of consensus with the concept of power, which was provided by Michel Foucault.
