Summary/Abstract: Jonas Švažas (1925-1976), a prominent Lithuanian painter, graduated from Vilnius Arts Institute (studio of Prof. Vytautas Mackevièius) in 1953 and began work as a teacher at the same institute. From 1966 to 1975, he took part in various art exhibitions in France, United Kingdom, the USA, Japan, Canada, Yugoslavia, Poland, German Democratic Republic, Bulgaria and Hungary. He also organized nine personal exhibitions in Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Sweden, and Austria. For his artistic and pedagogic achievements, Švažas was granted the title of an artist of merit in 1975. He died in 1976 in Vilnius. His artistic heritage consists of more than 600 paintings, 300 pastels and 150 drawings.
