Summary/Abstract: By describing the introduction of this concept and term “the new woman” in European periodicals i.e. the public discussion, this paper points out the interconnections and interdependence of the media construct and the literary character of“the new woman” in the late 19th and the early 20th century. After the first disputes and anti-feminist reactions to the new woman, this feminist myth gained its theoretical elucidation in the work of Alexandra Kollontai (1913, 1919), who received responses in Serbian/Yugoslav feminist press after World War I as well. Simultaneously,Serbian literature offered its own answer to the discussion of gender and the new female identity, intensely led in the interwar period (1919–1941) through the numerous characters of the new women, i.e. novels dealing with the new woman.
