Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes a controversial aspect in the history of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian monasteries dedicated to the Saint Places in the Orient, a “dedication” which made the object of a long trial, during the 19th century, between Greeks and Romanians on the one hand, and between Romanians, the suzerain power and the great European powers, on the other hand. After a brief description of the situation of these religious settlements, the paper approaches the theme of “dedication” through the lenses of canonical law, trying to explain whether secularization was an issue to be solved at a national or an international level, whether the secularization of monastery estates was a transgression on the part of the Romanian State. The Greeks’ refusal to present the European Areopagus with the required documents to certify their property right over the Romanian monasteries was finally considered a withdrawal from their quarrel with the Romanian government.
