Summary/Abstract: The article examines some issues concerning the relation between experience and understanding. Two semantic artefacts - experience (patyrimas) and generalized experience (patirtis) - are distinguished. The latter is equated with the so-called “anticipatory understanding” - a notion largely widespread in phenomenological and hermeneutical literature. The function of the generalized experience is related to its ability to play the role of a semantic context within which the conceived phenomena are interpreted and understood. The article ends with some conclusions summarizing the main results of the analysis.
