Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the revival of ecclesiastical and spiritual genres of concert in the choral works of the composers of the Republic of Moldova in the years 1990–2000. Some of the contemporary composers around the world have shown a significant interest for composing religious music. However, some of the innovators of modern religious music choose to create polyphonic compositions exclusively in church music genres and remain oblivious of the multitude of the modern secular musical genres. After a period of prohibition, similar processes are also recorded in the Republic of Moldova. The acute interest for exploring the church music genres and styles was demonstrated by the composers of choral music and also by the composers-symphonists that were eager to explore vocal polyphony. The author examines the influence of the stylistic trends in Europe and America of the XXth century, from avant-garde to postmodernism, and the traditions of Byzantine church music and Western-European choral art of the XIII–XIX centuries, on the composers’ reflections on the evolution of the national choral music at the mentioned stage. Similar phenomena in the culture of the countries, to which Moldova is traditionally affiliated to – Russia and Romania, are taken into account.
