Summary/Abstract: The present study is a component of my PhD thesis Port-cities under the influence of the European Danube Commission. 1856-1948. The main objective is the analysis of the spatial and urban development of maritime Danube, as a result of the activities developed by E.D.C. between 1856 and 1948. The research will analyze the development of port cities and the urban study of ports, as functional areas of the cities. The novelty of the paper is the fact that E.D.C. is analyzed from an urban and architectural point of view and it focuses on the actions that influenced the spatial development of the territory along the Danube. The context is created by analyzing the treaties concerning the freedom of navigation on international rivers which preceded the Paris Treaty from 1856 and the foundation of E.D.C. The authority of E.D.C. on the Romanian territory is presented in comparison with the attributes of another international commission, namely the Central Commission for Navigation on Rhine. The article summarizes the historical evolution and legislation under which E.D.C. operated from 1856 to 1865. The activity of E.D.C. in this first decade of existence and its impact on the navigation and spatial development of the watercourse territory is presented.
