Summary/Abstract: Fertility transition has been taking place in various social, economic, and cultural settings, and with various dynamics. However, most frequently fertility decline has not been quick; it had to be backed up by radical turns in reproductive behavior of majority of the population. Thus cases of unusually quick fertility decline, especially in countries featured by high degree of traditionalism, attract a lot of attention. This paper focuses on two such cases – China and Iran – where fertility has dropped below replacement level. It discusses demographis indicators that illustrate these changes in fertility, and explains the causes of the fertility decline process.
