Church and Society in the Time of Bishop Vasile Moga (1810-1845). Evaluation of the Sources

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to frame the activity of Bishop Vasile Moga in the context of the religious situation from Transylvania and to present the state of the Orthodox bishopric and of other religious institutions such as the Consistory, archdeaconries, parishes, before, during, and after his age (1805-1847). The research is focusing on the documents of the „Vasile Moga” collection, preserved in the Church Archive of the Orthodox Metropolitan Bishopric of Sibiu (Arhiva Bisericească a Mitropoliei Ortodoxe din Sibiu), as well as the census of 1805, ,,Schematismus” (official register of priests, archdeacons, etc.) of 1812-1840, the census of 1850 published by Traian Rotariu, and not least the ,,Schematismus” of the Greek-Oriental Church, published at Buda, in 1846/1847. The source analysis reveals the institutional situation of the Transylvanian Orthodox Church from the time of Vasile Moga offering also data concerning the clerics and the civilians. The methodology of dealing with these sources is a vital aspect of this research. The study will offer a clearer and more complete image of the Orthodox Church of Transylvania during Bishop Vasile Moga and not least on the personality of this religious leader.
