Summary/Abstract: The regime of compulsory tolerance, otherwise known as political correctness, has plagued Western societies for several decades already. The most insidious feature of the regime is that it is a natural outgrowth of assumptions and beliefs widely shared by Western intellectual and political elites and accepted by many ordinary people. The assumptions are those of modern liberalism, now the ruling ideology in the West, an ideology intent on implementing its vision of equal liberty for all. The fight against discrimination involved in the endeavor is in effect a massive assault on Western traditions and ways of life. The emancipatory project of modern liberalism tends to become ever more repressive and destructive, though in softer and subtler forms than those of more violent ideologies. Though the project rests on faulty philosophical foundations, it keeps inflicting great damage to Western societies because of its grip on the public mind.
