System of values of premodern world of Slovak village

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the issue of value as theme of discourse in social sciences as well as a theme in ethnographic research. The cornerstone of the article is the process of constituting values in pre-modern pre-industrial world of the Slovak countryside. Because of the need of concretising and specifying the theme, the attention focused on the village of Čičmany, about which there is enough factual material. It enabled an interpretation of judgements concerning the values which satisfied material and partially also non-material spiritual needs as well as images of what was desirable and significant in the social environment under study.
