Summary/Abstract: The starting point of the investigation in the Heraclitus’ category or logos has been the conception of Christ as logos in the gospel of John. The logos of Heraclitus at the same time is the word of the philosopher and the eternal law of the cosmos, by which the change or the elements of matter is governed, in their constant transition from one to another, i.e. from fire to air, to water and finally to earth, according to their content of fire. The soul of man, beginning in the light of the high, becomes body by filling up with moisture and earth, but it can recognize the glimpse of logos in itself by the help of the nous and then, by drying up, to elevate to the light again. For Heraclitus this process of up and down of the soul remains purely material whereas ‘god’ is a monistic concept of harmony. John’s understanding of Logos as God is personal, and, through identification with the logos in Christ, it leads man salvation and being ‘sons of God’. Thus a materialist conception of logos stands before a soteriological one.
