SURVEY OF HISTORIC FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

Summary/Abstract: Evaluating the authenticity of cultural heritage buildings is one of the most important aspects of their categorization. Foundations are often the only part of the building to survive in situ, and thus contribute to the overall evaluation of its authenticity. When reconstructing such buildings, therefore, particular attention should be paid to the proper assessment of the state of the surviving foundations. The literature on historic foundation engineering is very sparse compared with that dealing with other structural elements, so that civil engineers are seldom familiar with foundation engineering. This paper provides an account of the detailed research conducted on the foundations of ten cultural heritage properties in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
