Summary/Abstract: Mstislav Dobuzhinsky (1875–1957) was a famous Lithuanian-Russian painter of the first half of the 20th century. He was distinguished by his expressionist manner and keen interest in modern industrial cityscapes. His urban paintings mostly represented architectural motives of St. Petersburg, Vilnius and Kaunas. He often painted derelict or tragic scenes from urban life which expressed the nightmarish bleakness and loneliness of modern times. The article discusses peculiarities of his cityscape aesthetics and style; it also analyzes their interaction with various decorative arts’ currents.
