Summary/Abstract: At the end of the Second World War general well known social changes occurred in the city of Klaipeda and in the entire Klaipeda region. With the project of rebuilding Klaipeda harbour and the sea industries, various nationalities moved to this almost completely destroyed and empty city. Local state administrations tempted industrial workers with promises of living flats, salaries and good social guaranties for families in 1950’s and 1960’s. Hence, a multicultural society (more or less 70 national groups) was created in Klaipeda. Many of those people, their children and grandchildren live there still. What is the national identity situation in Klaipeda at present? We know of officially registered Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Latvian, Tartar, Jewish, German, Armenian and Azerbaijan national minorities in Klaipeda right now. In the first decade of the 21st C. are they ready to preserve the roots of their national identity, their language, religious and family traditions? What about their new generations? What problems, self- influences, and cases of culture assimilation are known in this field here during Soviet times and presently? Results of such investigations (the Polish case) are presented in this article.
