Legal and organizational dimensions of the Schengen area

Summary/Abstract: This article discusses legal and organizational dimensions of the Schengen area. The author points out that the Schengen area concerns economic, social and political processes in Europe. The purpose of the article is to discuss the legal, multi-faceted basis for the functioning of the Schengen acquis. It also covers the institutional framework for the implementation of Schengen tasks, including the role of the executive agencies Frontex and EASO, as well as the tasks that accompany the operations of SIS II, VIS and EUROSUR systems. The final section is devoted to one of the key issues of the functioning of the Schengen area, namely the provisions on the protection of personal data.
