Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this article is to offer an introduction to the concept of creative towns. This concept began to be used in Slovakia only a couple of years ago and represents a new area of interest for Slovak urban anthropology. The fundamental idea of this approach is urban development using the artistic and creative potential of the urban population. The text maps the origins and development of the concept of creative towns and its main features. Emphasis is placed on the theory of Richard Florida who is one of the biggest promoters of the idea of creative towns, though his approach is often criticised by other researchers. The final chapter of this paper describes the current state of research and application of this concept in Slovakia and highlights the possible ways of grasping it with a perspective for the future.
