Summary/Abstract: This article describes the results of one part of the scientific project “Paradigmatic changes in the thinking of Lithuanian society and European space.” This portion investigates the changes of the contemporary art. It suggests that the classical categories of the philosophy of art are no longer adequate for the conceptualization of contemporary artworks. Various different interpretations of the earlier substantial changes in art are presented. The unique character of changes in contemporary art is distinguished by the new interpretation and extrapolation of the concept of “scientific paradigm.” This concept allows one to define and to analyze the substantial change, despite the constantly changing application of some basic principles. The article notes that the change in the 20th century art has been paradigmatic. It describes the variety of its features in particular artworks of different spheres of art. The article concludes that the main element of the new paradigm of art is the attempt of the creators to deconstruct the traditional principles of art. The results of investigation constitute the basis for an analysis of the influence of the paradigmatic changes of art in the thinking of society. That analysis will be given in the next article.
