Summary/Abstract: Contemporary sources did not mention the family name of the last royal dynasty of the medieval Serbia. It is therefore assumed that the appearance of the surname of Mrnjavčević in the sources of a later date was the result of the influence of tradition and folk poetry. The researchers who studied this family, in general incidentally, linked the appearance of this surname with a work of Mavro Orbin that was published in 1601. However, they overlooked three sources dating from the second half of the 16th century, where this name had been mentioned. These are Ilirski grbovnik (Illyrian Heraldry), Sutjesko rodoslovlje (The Genealogy of Sutjeska) and Ruvarčev rodoslov (The Genealogy of Ruvarac). The oldest of the three sources and the oldest known written source mentioning the name of Mrnjavčević is The Genealogy of Ruvarac written between 1563 and 1584. It remains unanswered whether it was introduced into the Genealogy from some other, to us unknown written source, or from the folk poetry and tradition.
