Summary/Abstract: Petras Repšys, a painter, sculptor, book illustrator, ex-libris creator, etc., was born in 1940 in Šiauliai. In 1960 he graduates from Kaunas Fine Arts Secondary School where his teachers were E. Jakutytė and Č. Kontrimas. From 1960 till 1967 Repšys studied in Vilnius Institute of Fine Arts. After graduation from the Institute, he joined the movement of non-conformist intellectuals’ and artists’ participating in the republican and international exhibitions and plein-airs. In his creative work Repšys tries various art forms. His art works reflects the history of Lithuania and the ancient Baltic and Lithuanian mythology. The number of works he dedicates to Vilnius: from 1973 till 1978 Repšys designed the exterior and interior of the book store Versmė; from 1974 till 1985 he created the ensemble of frescos The Seasons for the Library Vilnius University Lithuanistic Center; from 1987 till 1993 – the etching cycle The Old Vilnius. In 1985 he was awarded by the Soviet Lithuania State Prize for print series My Motherland and fresco cycle The Seasons. In 1997 he had won the Lithuanian National prize in Culture and Arts for etching cycle Vilnius and cycles of medals From the Lithuanian Pantheon, Fatal events of millennium of Lithuania”, “Feasts and Tragedies of Independence period”. In 2000 Repšys was awarded by Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas IV degree medal.
