The impact of rail transport on the architectural and planning structure down town of Chisinau

Summary/Abstract: This article refers to the impact of the railway network on the urban infrastructure of the historic city of Chisinau. Rail transport is divided into two categories – exterior and interior (tram). The stages of development of these transports have been described, proposals have been presented for the development and revitalization of tramway networks in Chisinau and its efect on the formation of the historic city’s planimetric structure. In some places, the tram and the tram network were directly connected to the railway. This has led to the formation of a unique network. Unfortunately, its fragments have not been preserved so far, just like the whole network. One element that has now become an open “Konka”, which is today at the Tram Museum in Chisinau. To complete the exhibits of this museum, it is proposed to call the municipality of Odessa to redeem one of the oldest trams. In the historical part of Chisinau is proposed the reconstruction of a road section with the installation of the rails and the introduction of the old tram. There will be a recovery of this type of transport in the infrastructure of Chisinau. The development of the “speed tram”, as stated in the general plan of Chisinau’s development, will create the connection between three residential areas – Râşcani, Ciocana and Botanica. World practice shows the profitability and efficiency of this type the transport for the development of public transport.
