The Białystok Branch of the University of Warsaw in the process of becoming an independent university

Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the creation of the Białystok Branch of the University of Warsaw, itsfunctioning in the form of Teachers College and the transformation into an independentuniversity. It discusses the fundamental changes in the organisational structure of the BialystokBranch in the years 1968–1997, the range of assistance offered by the home institution(University of Warsaw) to the Bialystok Branch and the concept of connecting all Bialystokuniversities. In addition, the article presents various initiatives and actions of the local communityand external institutions for the initiation of an independent university in Podlasie.
