Summary/Abstract: This article deals with differences in the level of education and schooling of the population in individual republics and provinces as these are affected by economic and demographic features, and also with changes in the educational composition of the population brought about the rise in the last twenty years of the number of those attending school. Only formal school qualifications have been taken into account, because the results of other forms of education, as for example, literacy courses, on-the-job training, the training of workers for specific jobs at people’s and workers’ universities, and education through information media have not up till now been statistically covered in Yugoslavia.
