Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on two Czech lexical units expressing sympathy: {soucítit} (verb) and {soustrast} (noun), and presents an attempt to test if a syntactic-semantic analysis can lead to determining the closest equivalents of these expressions in Polish. The analysis proper is preceded by automatic extraction of pairs of equivalents (using the Treq tool) and the dictionary and corpus data are applied to establish the meanings of the expressions. The research also includes automatic excerption of the expressions (with aligned segments) from the parallel corpus InterCorp. The segments are analysedmanually so that it can be checked how the key expression was translated and what kinds of collocations and arguments it has. Subsequently, the Word Sketches tool is applied to complement their collocation profiles. Finally, the article presents an equivalent-searching algorithm, based on the syntactic-semantic analysis.
