Summary/Abstract: This article outlines the state of research on dreams and dreaming. Windt proposes a new structure to describe conscious experiences while dreaming. Building on methodological and theoretical achievements in the natural sciences as well as philosophy, she indicates new directions for the development of a philosophical theory of dreaming and related concepts of dreaming, wakefulness and consciousness. Windt discusses the phenomenology of dreaming as well as the relations between the sleeping physical body and the sleeping ‘I’. This allows her to explore alternative states of consciousness and their relationship to dreams and dreaming.
