ISBN 978-9955-847-80-9 The notice contains a review and an analysis of the book “Contemporary Approaches to the Self and the Other”. The book is the result of the scientific program “The ’Self’ and the ’Other’ in Lithuania” conducted by the Lithuanian Institute of History. This book is an analysis of the anthropologic theory and social practices of the interaction between Self and Other at various stages of political and cultural development in Eastern Europe, especially Lithuania. The book is designed to identify a node of cultural, ethnographic and ethnological problems associated with the phenomenon of border identities. Analysis is through the prism of hermeneutical, phenomenological, structural, and functional methods. Approaches to the Self are changing along with important scientific and social actualities. The European integration processes have brought up many important and diverse questions and approaches to the alterity of science, society and culture, which this book successfully attempts to investigate. The book reveals the social and cultural mechanisms of opposition to Self and Other, as well as potential ways of rapprochement.
