Summary/Abstract: Purpose of the work is to study waltz as a variety of ballroom dance from the position of historical art retrospection and reconstruction of cultural – historical waltz origins in the connection with genesis of its technical-tactical and genre features. Methodology of the investigation is based on the methods of analysis and synthesis, historical and theoretical reconstruction and content analysis. The author is guided by the principles of objectivity and historicism. Scientific novelty lies in the revealing of cultural-historical origins and genre – type evolution of waltz as an important part of the European program of ballroom dance. Conclusions. The article concentrates on the national and popular origins of waltz and pluralism of its manifestations depending on epoch and national factors. It underlines the mutually specified influence of music and dance in waltz. On the basis of given analysis it is proved that waltz as a dance itself, is a synthetic (consists of elements of ländler, furiant, kuiaviak) and multi-component (Viennese Waltz, Waltz-Boston, Waltz-Minuet, Waltz-Gapon) type of choreography, which for centuries has been remaining a source of inspiration for choreographers and composers.
