Summary/Abstract: The new Constitution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was promulgated by the Federal People’s Assembly on April 7, 1963. The drafting of the Constitution took a relatively long time and an enormous amount of work and attention was expended on it. The task of laying down the basic conceptions upon which the new Constitution was to be founded, was entrusted to the Constitutional Commission appointed by the Federal People’s Assembly in 1960. A large number of public workers and scholars, representatives of political and social life, and numerous institutions and professional organizations from all over the country, took part in this work. The Preliminary Draft of the new Constitution, which was completed in September 1962, was adopted by the Federal People’s Assembly in principle on 21 September 1962. The definite enactment of the Constitution had been preceded by several months of very extensive public discussion in all parts of the country, by means of which the citizens of Yugoslavia expressed their approval of the fundamental conceptions of the Preliminary Draft, and by their observations, proposals and suggestions contributed to the final drafting of the new Constitution.
