Summary/Abstract: The issue of the status of the Autonomous Province of Kosovo within the Federal Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia (FSRY) during the 1980s became the main topic in the debates within the Yugoslav Communist Party. The outbreak of student demonstrations in 1981 became a pretty talked about incident both inside and out of FSRY, but in the meanwhile, the internationalization of Kosovo’s problem has begun. Serbia by using its favorable position inside the FSRY on 23 March 1989 achieved to abolish the autonomy that Kosovo acquired by the Constitution of 1974. The 1980s showed up the weaknesses that FSRY had, in other words the Federal authorities were powerless to stop the outbreak of riots inside the FSRY. This article examines Kosovo’s political problem within the (FSRY) during the years 1980-1989.
