The Lexicographic Definition – Metatext or Metadiscourse?

Summary/Abstract: It is generally acknowledged that the information following a headword in a monolingual dictionary is a matter of metalanguage, and since the information itself may be of several types, one is entitled to consider several metalanguages. Within this context, the analytical definition is a special means of making any lexical unit in its structure function metalinguistically. Since many specialists have already embraced concepts such as “metadiscourse” and “metatext”, the lexicographic (analytical) definition must be revisited, which is the scope of the present paper.
