Summary/Abstract: This paper is an attempt to analyse the global energy sector from the point of view of sustainable development in the light of the EU energy policy. Its aim is to try to identify the challenges and problems faced by the energy sector in the implementation of sustainable development in the energy sector. The EU through appropriate guidelines and objectives, as well as targets in its energy policy, is trying to implement the principles of sustainable development. Isolated actions of the EU in this area will have a regional character. To achieve this effect on a global scale other actions of other countries in the energy sector should be in line with the principles of sustainable development, as well as those proposed by the EU. To do this, it is necessary to review the current state of global energy for the guidelines proposed by the EU, as well as the principles of sustainable development. The analysis has been carried out mainly on the basis of information contained in reports of BP, IEA and Eurostat, as well as an analysis of the documents of the EU energy policy. The results indicate the challenges and problems, which must be dealt by the energy sector, to do best to implement the concept of sustainable development.
