Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to examine and evaluate long-term trends of the factors affecting consumption and to identify future trends and changes which allow it to be classified as sustainable. The study involved: the population, degree of urbanisation, wealth, international trade, globalisation, and the use of the internet. Additionally, in many cases, these factors were supplemented by comments on the social consequences of their occurrence. As a result, it is clear that global changes are moving towards increased consumption resulting from the dynamic growth of Asian developing countries. This means that, on the one hand, living conditions of “poor South” are being improved, but, on the other hand, consumption based mostly on the use of material goods continues to increase. The study was conducted using a critical analysis of the available literature, in particular reports of international organisations.
