Summary/Abstract: Following the two decades of Polish experience, one may make preliminary summing up relating to the management theory and practice in Polish towns and municipalities as well as survey whether and how Polish self-governments make use of the theory of territorial marketing, which is the most coherent theory of local self-governmental unit management. The local self-government unit is an object and, at the same time, a subject of the market and it affects its structure. The selfgovernments’ potential is to be used in animating particularly the sector of SMEs which is a substantial creator of the contemporary market. In her article, the author presented how self-governmental authorities identify needs of their clients and how they shape the product delivered, inter alia, affecting the structure of the local market in such a way that the recognised expectations could be satisfied.
