Summary/Abstract: This paper looks at the Christian Image debate in the ninth-century West. It examines the arguments that the celebrated Irish recluse and scholar Dungal put forward in response to the radical iconoclastic ideas of Claudius of Turin against the Holy Cross and Icons. There are echoes of Dungal’s argumentation in the writings of later authors, such as Jonas of Orléans and Walafrid Strabo.
