Summary/Abstract: The Hemsin kaza and its county, situated in the east of Rize in the Eastern Black Sea region started to gain a Turkic appearance within the process after the Malazgirt battle, well before the Ottoman conquest. Several Muslim tombstones found everywhere in the region point to ethnic identity of the local population, as well as Ottoman archival documents from very early times.
