Summary/Abstract: In this paper, a link is drawn between fate and heroism as they appear in the works of Shakespeare (more particularly in Julius Caesar, Hamlet and King Lear) and Nietzsche. Heroism is first defined as a philosophical and non necessarily martial notion, while destiny or fate is distinguished from fatum, as Nietzsche understands it. Eventually, amor fati or the love for destiny is seen as tragic in essence in both works, but not in a pessimistic way, however painful it proves to have been in the life of the philosopher at least.
