Summary/Abstract: In this article I will firstly present the current moment of the contemporary Fairtrade system and its benefits for marginalized, small-scale producers and workers from developing countries. Moreover, I will critically analyse the current position of the Republic of Serbia in relation to that system, as a country which belongs to a subgroup of upper-middle income economies whose producers and workers are excluded, and prevented from producing Fairtrade products by the current FLO International’s rules, regulations and standards. Finally, I will critically reflect on the commonly cited justification of this approach and point out the problems that it causes, for both the Serbian marginalized small-scale producers and workers, and for the Fairtrade system itself.
