Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the relation between democracy, economic development and human development. The goal of the article is to answer the question whether democracy is necessary condition for development. In the first part of the article, taking into consideration defi nitions of democracy and conceptualization of development, author provides the overview of the major debates on democracy – economic development relation and concludes that democracy is not necessary condition for economic development. In the second part of the article author examines the relation between democracy and human development, and stresses the importance of democracy as a system of government and social relations which provides necessary conditions without which genuine human development would not be met.
