Summary/Abstract: Taking into consideration the importance of the cultural, ethical and political shift in contemporary literary and cultural theory, the paper provides a New Historicist analysis of the concept of History of Croatian Literature by Ivo Frangeš. This primarily refers to the reading of literary history as a signifying practice which mediates, produces and discloses power relations within its cultural, social and ideological context. The reading of narrative and fictional elements considers the legitimity of the genre in regard to its literary and historical »accuracy«. Finally, the analysis of Frangeš’s model of literary history is used to describe the process whereby the worldview, prejudices, interests, political and ideological imperatives of the author formulate historiographical discourse.
