Summary/Abstract: This Paper deals with the character development and educational role of a catechist of Catholic catechism in the contemporary democratic school especially considering its holistic paradigm to which the Catholic catechism and catechist give a valuable contribution. The Paper does not discuss school and its characteristics, rather they are taken as a framework for considering the educational role of a Catholic catechist in school that after the democratic changes in 1992 was reintroduced into the educational system in B&H. One may say that catechism has been successfully established in the last 25 years in the school system at the educational, programmatic and formal-legal level. That is why this Paper only touches upon church and school expectations from catechists regarding their spiritual-religious, Christian-ethical and educational identity stressing instead student’s experience and the reception of the educational role of the catechist in school. This was the aim of the research carried out among elementary school students in Čapljina and Stolac. The Paper also interprets the results obtained about their experience, understanding and views of this educational role of the catechist. The interpretation relies on the church, theological, and educational framework of the catechist’s identity, in connection with his spiritual/religious and expert competences for the promotion of Catholic catechism quality, this at the level of authentic mediation of the “right teaching” at the level of one’s own “testimony to Christian life” and at the level of expert “educational skill”. In the Conclusion the Paper brings once again the main accents: catechists’ life example and testimony to what they teach their students; the possibility of applying to and acceptance in needs; ability for a quality communication, tolerance and respect of diversities; implementation of a quality cooperative and creative instruction that stimulates critical opinion and responsible behavior.
