Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the press discourse on publicizing terrorist organizations and their terrorist and violent activities. Also in this study we aim to demonstrate to what extent the causes and consequences of terrorist activities can be manipulated through lexical or morphological features used in any discourse. For this purpose, the discourse processed in news and commentaries on six distinguished terrorist attacks carried out by different terrorist organizations in Europe and Turkey in 2016 reported in international and Turkish national press has been examined. In this context, probability and uncertainty modalities as well as passive voice structures used in the samples obtained from the collected headlines, subtitles and commentaries were counted, examined and categorized through content analysis. At the end of the study, we found that the frequency of the use of probability and uncertainty modalities and the frequency of passive voice structures were directly proportional and the frequency of usage of uncertainty and probability modalities was found to differ as to the terrorist activities and the terrorist organization performing the activity. Finally, the results related to frequency of use in the use of modality were evaluated through critical discourse analysis.
