Summary/Abstract: A prominent character of 19th Century Ottoman history, Mehmed Ali Paşa (b1827- d1878), known as “Macarlı”, has not attained the recognition he deserves among Turkish academic circles. He is usually mentioned in polemics concerning his better known descendants such as Nazım Hikmet and Mehmet Ali Aybar. The present study is an attempt to shed light on the last three months of the Paşa’s life with some help from archive documents. Mehmed Ali Paşa despite his dedication to his duties at all stages of his career, his honesty, qualifications, his self sacrificing, brave and patriotic stance, has been unduly criticized in popular discourse due to his ethnic origin.
